\noften snakebites cluster around certain bio-mechanical activities, in certain geographic
\nareas, at certain times of the day.
\n\u2022 Grass-cutting remains a major situational source of bites.
\n\u2022 In rubber, coconut, palmyra and arecanut plantations clearing the base of the
\ntree to place manure causes signifi cant numbers of bites.
\n\u2022 Harvesting high growing crops like millet which require attention focused
\naway from the ground.
\n\u2022 Rubber tapping workers are susceptible and it happens often in the early hours
\n03:00-06:00.
\n\u2022 Agricultural workers involved in vegetable harvesting \/ fruit picking.
\n\u2022 Tea and coffee plantation workers face the risk of arboreal and terrestrial vipers
\nwhen picking or tending bushes.
\n\u2022 Clearing weeds exposes workers to the same danger as their grass-cutting
\ncolleagues.
\n\u2022 Walking at night without a torch, barefooted or wearing sandals accounts for a
\nsignifi cant number of bites.\u2022 Bathing in ponds, streams and rivers, in the evening. It should not be assumed
\nthat because the victim is bitten in water that the species is non-venomous.
\nCobras and other venomous species are good swimmers and may enter the
\nwater to hunt.
\n\u2022 Walking along the edge of waterways.
\n\u2022 Plucking fl owers in areas of fl ower cultivation
\n\u2022 Plucking hay \/ straw from bundle of hay \/ straw
\n\u2022 Persons involved in picking up dry fi re wood, loose stones, heaps of paddy,
